The Rotary Club of Canmore

The Rotary Club of Canmore has raised nearly one million dollars since 1991 to support a wide variety of local projects – each serving to raise the profile of Canmore internationally as well as help individuals and local community groups tackle activities, which contribute to the quality of life and living in Canmore.

Rotary has a major focus on youth and business.  Each year Canmore Rotary provides prizes to deserving students in all our schools recognizing their outstanding achievement in citizenship as well as academic, vocational and artistic pursuits.  As the major sponsor of the Canadian Rockies Regional Science Fair, Rotary encourages young people to excel in the sciences – and they are at provincial and national levels!  The Canmore Club has historically participated in Rotary Youth Exchange where a high school student from Canmore was sponsored to spend a year abroad.   As well each year, we had hosted a high school student from abroad.   Canmore Rotary, in collaboration with other agencies, sponsors a ‘Learn at Lunch’ series which targets issues of interest to businesses in our community and covers a wide range of topics at meetings over lunch at the Canmore Golf and Curling Club.

Financial and volunteer support to community groups and their activities has been a hallmark of Canmore Rotary – including Rotary’s Canada Day breakfast, the Canmore Folk Festival, the Highland Games and World Cup cross-county and biathlon events.  The Club is most proud of support for those community activities, which fly under the radar – including sponsorship of soccer and hockey teams, recognizing veterans and acknowledging residents who make outstanding contributions to our community and its fabric.

The tremendous support Rotary enjoys in Canmore has allowed the Club to undertake many Legacy Projects which provide lasting services and facilities in our Town.  Along with other community agencies, Canmore Rotary has been a partner in the expansion of the Bow River Seniors Lodge, the enhancement to Rotary Friendship Park, and the Canmore Library.  The Canmore Club has been proud to make significant financial contributions to the Canmore Hospital Cancer Treatment Centre and Canmore Rotary House – each providing much needed community resources for individuals in special need and distress.  As well in 2014, The Rotary Club of Canmore was the official nutrition sponsor for the Youth Alberta Winter Games donating $25,000.

Within days of catastrophic June 2013 flooding, the Rotary Club of Canmore and the Canmore Rotary Foundation formed a Flood Relief Group. The Committee jumped into action, contacting numerous local agencies and individuals to identify the Bow Valley’s most urgent needs, and liaising with hundreds of donors and event organizers anxious to help.  Over $800,000 was raised for flood-affected residents in Canmore, the Municipal District of Bighorn, Morley and the Kananaskis Improvement District. Monies came from thousands of individual and corporate donors across Canada, and from fundraising events ranging from lemonade stands and BBQs to concerts and golf tournaments.

In February 2017 a historic relationship between the Rotary Club of Canmore and the YWCA Banff was announced. The YWCA has a project called “Higher Ground Women’s Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing”. The YWCA has plans to make the Higher Ground project a reality by 2020. It will be a purpose- built facility located in Canmore to provide services to the Bow Valley. The concept and objectives of this project align with the objectives of Rotary and our club will provide matching funding of approximately $240,000 to help the YWCA achieve its goal by 2020. While supporting many other community activities the Club has undertaken a number of larger projects which provide different needs towards services and facilities in the Bow Valley. Past
